Eligibility criteria: Everyone applying for the Concessionary Travel Scheme on the grounds of disability has to be initially assessed by their Local Authority Social Services department. You can contact Gateshead’s Social Service department on 433 8800.

Applicants must have one of the following types of disability to be eligible for a Concessionary Travel Pass:
• Blind or partially sighted
• Profoundly or severely deaf
• Without speech
• Cannot walk without excessive labour, at an extremely slow pace or with excessive pain
• Do not have arms or have long term loss of use of both arms
• Have a learning disability
• Someone who has or would be refused a driving licence on certain medical grounds

Service description:
Disabled children aged five to 16 years old who live in Tyne and Wear can travel free of charge on buses, the Metro, the Shields Ferry and on the Newcastle to Sunderland rail service all day every day. A Concessionary Travel Pass and Under 16 Pop Card is required, as well as a Metro Gold Card to travel on the Metro (small charges apply). The Under 16 Pop Card can be used to travel at a concessionary child fare between Newcastle and Metrocentre/Blaydon.
