Gateshead Mencap Society is a registered charity run entirely by volunteers. It works to improve the lives and opportunities of Gateshead children and adults with a learning disability.

The society operates ‘Gateway’ clubs at Wesley Memorial Church Hall which offer support, counselling and social activities to members and their families. Transport to and from the clubs can be provided for those members that live at home. The society has organised unique trips in the past for members including Euro Disney, York, Blackpool, Whitby, pantomimes, shows, circus, line dancing and boxing matches. There are also more regular activities such as: coffee mornings, pie and peas suppers, Christmas party, dinners out, discos, etc.
