Service description:Adaptations are changes made to a property that help disabled people to live independently in their home and maintain a good quality of life.
Adaptations can enable family members, carers and personal assistants to help with moving and handling given the right guidance and training.
Minor adaptations include things like grab rails, door entry systems, alterations to steps, widening of a path and loop systems. Major adaptations include things like ramps, stair lifts, level access shower, ceiling track hoist and alterations to essential kitchen work surfaces. Equipment is also available for loan by the Gateshead Equipment Service and includes moving and handling equipment like mobile hoists and transfer boards, bathing equipment like bath seats and shower chairs, trolleys and tables, chairs and chair raisers and toileting equipment like commodes and bedpans.
If you think you might need equipment or adaptations and live in a council house, please contact one of Gateshead Council’s social care teams (see contact details).
