| Eligibility / referral criteria: | The College provides education for young people whose needs cannot be met within mainstream general further education. For the majority of young people living in Gateshead who have learning difficulties and/or disabilities, education and training provision will be delivered in a mainstream setting. A specialist college will be considered for a small number of young people with a learning difficulty assessment, where the local authority follows the view that their education and training needs can only be met by an Independent Specialist Provider. A placement at Percy Hedley College requires agreed funding and the young person’s Connexions personal adviser can provide more information about whether a student may be eligible to apply for a place. |

| Service description: | Percy Hedley College is a specialist college for students aged 18-25 with moderate to severe complex learning difficulties and/or multiple needs including physical disabilities, complex communication needs, sensory impairments and medical needs. Courses are offered in three main programme areas including Independence Skills e.g. Travel and Mobility and Safety in the Community, Communication Skills e.g. Making Requests, Directing Others and Sharing Personal Information and Vocational Skills e.g. Administration, Retail, Catering and Horticulture. There are also opportunities for work experience placements in the college and with local employers and courses like ICT, Sport and Recreation, Literacy and Numeracy. The College offers residential and day placements. |
